MIT & Media Lab - comments of note
IBM & MIT Media Lab hosted a conference on virtual worlds on 15 June - the title of the conference was, “Where Business, Society, Technology & Policy Converge”. As part of the conference Colin Parris, VP for Digital Convergence outlined, amongst other things, what he thinks is essential in creating future viable virtual platforms.
He did this by assuming Virtual Worlds would meet the requirements of business and government by addressing; scalability, security, content availability and appropriateness, privacy, content and brand protection.
What is encouraging from the perspective of this blog, is that security concerns are edging up the agenda at virtual world conferences. Parris went onto to discuss how the recent history of the web should be able to inform the development of virtual worlds. This is also one of the themes of this blog — that the recent history of the web has amplified a number of security concerns in relation to fraud, organized crime, and extremism.
